Prof Renata Schoeman
Associate Professor in Leadership; Head of the MBA in Healthcare Leadership: Stellenbosch Business School
Prof Renata Schoeman (MBChB, MSocSc, MMed, FCPsych, PhD, MBA, PGDipFS) has been in full-time private practice as a psychiatrist since 2008, with expertise spanning child, adolescent, and adult psychiatry. She has special interests in ADHD, eating disorders, mood disorders, and anxiety disorders.
Alongside her private practice, she is Associate Professor in Leadership and Head of the MBA in Healthcare Leadership at Stellenbosch Business School. She chairs the Child, Adolescent and Family Mental Health sub-committee of South Africa’s Ministerial Advisory Committee on Mental Health, serves on advisory boards for pharmaceutical companies, and co-founded the Goldilocks and The Bear Foundation.
A respected thought leader, she has been widely recognised for her advocacy and research, receiving numerous national and international awards for her contributions to psychiatry and mental health.
Hillyne Jonkerman
Founder and Chief Executive Officer: Bizzmed
Hillyne Jonkerman is the founder and CEO of Bizzmed, South Africa’s leading medical marketplace, designed to simplify and streamline healthcare procurement by connecting buyers and sellers. An alumnus of Stellenbosch University, where he obtained his B.Comm, he is recognised for his innovative approach to healthcare entrepreneurship and his commitment to creating positive change.
Hillyne’s entrepreneurial journey began after completing a graduate programme at Sanlam, when he launched his own tax practice in 2004. Today, he combines his experience and vision to mentor aspiring entrepreneurs, encouraging them to embrace challenges, pursue bold ideas, and make meaningful contributions. His story reflects resilience, innovation, and an enduring commitment to impact.
John van Kan
Head of Healthcare Sector, Business and Commercial Banking at Standard Bank South Africa
John van Kan is an accomplished financial sector leader and currently serves as Head of Healthcare Sector, Business and Commercial Banking at Standard Bank South Africa, a position he has held since November 2020. With more than two decades of experience in the banking industry, his career reflects a consistent commitment to innovation, strategic growth, and broadening access to essential services across the country.
John began his professional journey as a teacher, developing the leadership and communication skills that would later underpin his success in finance. In 2000, he transitioned into the banking sector and quickly distinguished himself in managerial and executive roles at leading institutions. His career includes senior positions such as Head of Medium Corporate Investment at RMB Private Bank, Head of Commercial Investments at First National Bank, Divisional Head of Professional Market at RMB Bank, and Head of Healthcare at FNB South Africa. At FirstRand, he played a pivotal role in launching new business models in commercial, business investment, private banking, and healthcare banking, demonstrating both his versatility and his ability to craft integrated financial solutions.
At Standard Bank, John was instrumental in establishing the dedicated Healthcare Sector, which has since secured the largest market share among financial services for healthcare practitioners. His leadership extends beyond traditional banking, with a strong focus on advancing Primary Health Care in alignment with South Africa’s national priorities. He has been especially dedicated to expanding rural healthcare access and fostering sustainable health infrastructure.
Under his guidance, Standard Bank has emerged as a leader in healthcare finance, recognised for its innovation and for building meaningful partnerships. His influence is reflected in the bank’s active participation at major platforms such as the World Health Expo, where it continues to demonstrate its commitment to transformative and sustainable solutions for South Africa’s healthcare sector.

Dr Randall Ortel
Karl Bremer Hospital Manager
Dr Randall Ortel is a beacon of perseverance and determination, charting an inspiring path from the tough neighbourhoods of Manenberg to managing the esteemed Karl Bremer Hospital. He is the first medical doctor and specialist from his community, exemplifying triumph against the odds.
Dr Ortel’s academic journey began at the University of Stellenbosch, where he earned his MBChB in Medicine & Surgery. He further expanded his expertise with postgraduate qualifications in Occupational Medicine, Emergency Medicine, and Obstetrics from the Colleges of Medicine of South Africa (CMSA) and was recently admitted as a Fellow of the Colleges of Family Medicine. He also holds a Masters’ Degree in Family Medicine from the University of Cape Town.
Funding his studies through part-time work as a minibus taxi driver, Dr Ortel embodies resilience, passion, and disciplined consistency. His remarkable journey demonstrates that with vision and determination, all barriers can be overcome and all objectives achieved. He continues to inspire those who dare to dream and relentlessly pursue their ambitions.
