JM Crafford
Head of Production, Winemaker: Stettyn Family Vineyards
JM Crafford grew up in the small town of Darling where his interest in wine grapes began to flourish. Little did he realise that Darling produced some of the country's finest grapes, highly sought after by enthusiasts. Spending many weeks in the hills, he immersed himself in pruning and canopy management, gaining a deep-rooted understanding of the wine industry.
After completing his schooling at Swartland, JM pursued a B.SC Agric at the University of Stellenbosch, concurrently gaining practical experience at Darling Cellars. His journey continued with a season at Groote Post, honing his winemaking skills even further.
Venturing abroad, JM spent two years at Rombauer Vineyards in Napa, California, followed by a season at Mitchelton Winery in Victoria, Australia. Returning home, he secured a position as assistant winemaker at Riebeek Cellars, where, after three years, he found himself engaged to the boss's daughter, prompting a change.
Now, twelve years and two children later, JM Crafford thrives at Stettyn Family Vineyards, having served as Head of Production for the past four years. Stettyn holds a special place in his heart, with its dedicated team, extraordinary terroir, and a rich history in winemaking.
