For more than a decade, Edwina Sonnenberg has been an inspiring presence at the Stellenbosch Business School (SBS). With a career spanning 11 years, her career is a testament to her resilience and dedication coupled with the power of education.

Sonnenberg’s path is a compelling narrative of wholesome and positive growth, motivated by her commitment to uplifting her community. Born on the Cape Flats, a region known for its socio-economic challenges, through her earlier lived experiences she was shaped into a driven and compassionate individual, determined to make an impact.

"My professional community and my commitment to excellence in every aspect of my work have been shaped by Stellenbosch Business School,” Sonnenberg said. "My family, friends, and my social community, where I measure my humanity, have all been influenced by my journey here.”

Sonnenberg began her academic journey at the business school by completing her undergraduate degree, a milestone that marked the beginning of her pursuit of knowledge. Working part-time at the school enabled her to further her studies, eventually leading to an honours degree.

"While I was busy with my honours, we visited early childhood development (ECD) centres in Delft and Blikkies Dorp, which inspired me to pursue a Master’s degree in Development Studies."

Her passion for community development does not stop there. Sonnenberg completed a Postgraduate Diploma in Leadership Development at Stellenbosch Business School, an accomplishment that encourages her to continue serving others and placing their needs ahead of her own. Her commitment to making a positive impact is palpable and contagious.

"I engage in community projects by assisting learners in applying to universities and securing funding. I am also busy with an ongoing stationery drive to support our ground staff with stationery packs for their children for the next school year.”

"I believe anyone can make a positive impact on someone's life, simply by being kind and helpful in any way. I have learned from people at Stellenbosch Business School that being generous with your time is a way of showing kindness to others.”

Her involvement in various community projects highlights her dedication to improving the quality of life for others. "Understanding that we are part of a community means realising we must work every day to improve the lives of the most vulnerable,” she asserts.

Reflecting on her time at Stellenbosch Business School, Sonnenberg’s commitment to making a positive impact is palpable.

"Stellenbosch Business School is a place that shapes people's future. It is a place of learning and sharing and a place of developing responsible leaders. Learning is a lifelong journey, and we can only strive for economic equality if we work toward a better society. This is what I embraced the most while working at the business school."

Sonnenberg's approach to helping others and going beyond the call of duty speaks to a profound commitment towards community, continuous self-improvement, and the relentless pursuit of a better future for all. Her story is a powerful reminder of the impact one individual can have through dedication, education, and an unwavering commitment to service.
