leadership journey
Olusiji Aina, Chair of Stellenbosch Business School West Africa Alumni, is a Development Economist with years of expertise in sustainability

Olusiji Aina, the Chairperson of the Stellenbosch Business School Western Africa Alumni Chapter, embodies the principles of responsible leadership. As an alum of the Business School, his journey reflects a profound commitment to fostering sustainable economic development and social innovation across Africa.

Reflecting on his engagement with the Business School, Olusiji says: “The Alumni Network events provide a valuable platform for knowledge exchange to drive innovative solutions to global challenges. It also strengthens our collective commitment to responsible leadership in our communities. My engagement as an alum has significantly elevated my professional trajectory.”

With over 20 years of professional experience as a Development Economist, Olusiji has been at the forefront of advising on critical economic policies and sustainable development. As Co-Chair of the Kogi State Economic Advisory Council, he plays a pivotal role in guiding government decisions on fiscal sustainability, infrastructural development and improving the quality of social services. His influence spans beyond Nigeria, where he works with organisations across Africa, promoting an environmentally conscious and socially just approach to economic development.

Olusiji’s extensive career has seen him collaborate with global institutions such as the World Bank, USAID and GIZ, as well as private enterprises and NGOs. His expertise in sustainable agriculture, renewable energy, healthcare and education has led him to assist impact investors in identifying opportunities that balance financial success with social and environmental benefits. His work in these sectors has been instrumental in helping businesses and public institutions integrate sustainability into their operations.

One of Olusiji’s most notable achievements was his leadership of the Income Generation and Livelihoods thematic group under the $22 million USAID-funded Feed the Future Nigeria Livelihoods Project. From 2015 to 2018, his team worked to drive market-led growth across Nigeria’s northern states, enhancing market access, financial inclusion, and vocational training for over 1.5 million small businesses and 100,000 vulnerable households. His strategic interventions helped these enterprises achieve sustainable development, particularly within the agricultural sector.

His journey to the global stage includes serving as a Member of the Board of Governors for the U.S.-Africa Trade Commission since 2022 and being appointed United Nations Ambassador of Peace by the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) under WOLMI Consultative Status in 2021 to promote global education and eradicate hunger. In 2022, Olusiji was also appointed as a Senior Research Fellow at the prestigious National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), where he teaches Strategy and Leadership at this key research think tank for the Nigerian federal and sub-national governments.

His academic background is equally impressive. A graduate of Statistics, he holds a Master of Philosophy (MPhil) in Development Finance from Stellenbosch Business School and an Executive Master’s Programme (EMP) from Lagos Business School. He has earned numerous certifications, including a Chartered Development Finance Analyst (CDFA) and a Chartered Global Investment Analyst (CGIA), reflecting his commitment to continuous learning and professional development.

As Olusiji continues to shape the future of economic development in Africa, his leadership remains grounded in the values of social justice, environmental consciousness and innovation. His journey is an inspiration to the Stellenbosch Business School alumni community, exemplifying how responsible leadership can create lasting impact in our societies.
