SBA’s 2024 graduates and top students celebrated
The 2024 graduation ceremony for the Stellenbosch Business School’s Small Business Academy (SBA) Western Cape cohort was not just a celebration of academic achievement but a tribute to the incredible entrepreneurial journeys of its standout graduates.
Among the 22 students recognised for completing the programme, three top achievers shone particularly brightly including Rucien Petersen, Zhureena Basadien, and Brent James.
Pioneering digital solutions
As the overall top student, Petersen, owner of Spot Media, not only claimed the highest honour but also excelled in the Finance, Business Plan, and Marketing modules. Petersen's digital marketing company, based in the northern suburbs of Cape Town, provides services in social media management, website marketing, and corporate workshops.
Reflecting on his journey, Petersen credited the SBA for sharpening his entrepreneurial skills and providing practical tools to address real-world challenges. “This recognition is truly humbling,” he said. “The SBA, Stellenbosch Business School, and the lecturers have been instrumental in helping us grow not only as entrepreneurs but also as individuals.”
Flourishing through adversity
Petersen’s journey into entrepreneurship began in 2018 after years of working in marketing within the insurance and fitness industries. Spot Media’s success, he explained, lies in staying adaptable in a rapidly evolving digital landscape. “The market still lacks a full understanding of the potential of digital marketing. COVID-19 forced businesses to shift into this space, but the focus now should be on natural and strategic growth rather than reactive changes,” Petersen added.
He also shared the hurdles he faced as an entrepreneur, from managing cash flow and compliance to finding the right team. Pricing strategies, he noted, are pivotal to attracting the right clients. “Pricing plays a huge role—not just in cash flow but also in shaping your client base. It's about striking the right balance to serve your target market effectively.”
Basadien was the Top achiever in the Business Essentials module, while James shared the Top Student Award for the Business Plan module with Petersen. James and Petersen stood out among the rest of the 2024 cohort for their creative and practical approach to entrepreneurial planning, earning them this award.
Inspiration and purpose
Dr Armand Bam, Head of Social Impact at Stellenbosch Business School, delivered an inspiring address, commending the motivation, resilience, tenacity, and growth of the graduates and emphasised the vital role small businesses play in South Africa’s economy.
The achievements of these top graduates exemplify the SBA’s mission to empower entrepreneurs to thrive in a challenging economic climate. Dr Bam captured the essence of the programme in his address: “Small businesses are the vessels of hope for communities, creating opportunities where none exist and crafting solutions to pressing challenges. The purpose is what sustains you when profits fluctuate; it is what transforms a business into a force for good.”
He emphasised that purpose-driven businesses are essential in today’s complex world, urging the graduates to redefine success beyond profits to include social responsibility and community impact.
Reflecting on the significance of the graduates’ journey, Dr Bam said, “You stand at the intersection of your past aspirations and your future potential. Remember: 'Smooth seas do not make skilful sailors.'”
