Career engagement is key to employability at SBS, reshaping how students and alumni build future-ready, meaningful careers.

Stellenbosch Business School is placing career engagement at the heart of its approach to employability - redefining what it means to build a meaningful, future-fit career in today’s dynamic world of work.

“Careers in our modern context require initiative-taking behaviours,” says Dr Adrian Parsadh, Head of Career Leadership and Lecturer in Organisational Behaviour & Leadership at the Business School. “We now understand that employability goes far beyond just landing a job. It’s about staying engaged, adaptable and proactive over the course of a career.”

As an executive career coach and organisational psychologist, Dr Parsadh encourages alumni and students to actively build their careers through continuous development of both technical skills and personal competencies. These, he explains, are gained during the transformative student journey at SBS and serve as essential tools for long-term career sustainability.

“We hope to see our graduates become not only successful professionals but also proud ambassadors of Stellenbosch Business School in every step of their careers.”

In today's evolving business landscape, the traditional one-life, linear career path is rapidly disappearing. Career engagement is now seen as a critical factor in developing a clear vocational identity and building confidence in one’s ability to manage professional growth. Dr Parsadh urges graduates to design careers that are interconnected with all facets of life - work, family, community and changing circumstances.

Global collaborations driving impact

To strengthen this mindset, SBS Career Leadership recently partnered with the University of St. Gallen and Stanford University to host interactive workshops. Topics included Designing Your Future and Overcoming Procrastination - all aimed at supporting personal agency, boosting career engagement and helping participants shape their futures with clarity and confidence.

The Business School’s in-house executive career coaching further supports alumni and students through customised, one-on-one coaching to help navigate career transitions and stimulate initiative-taking behaviours.

In line with its experiential learning philosophy, the SBS Consulting Club, in collaboration with Anura Partners, a boutique consulting firm, recently hosted a dedicated event for students considering a pivot into the consulting industry. The event offered practical insights and opened the door to real-world opportunities. More events are planned for 2025 as the club expands its offering.
