ABOUT THE PANELLISTS
Prof Charles Adjasi
Prof Charles Adjasi is the acting Director of Stellenbosch Business School as from 1 November 2023.
He is currently the Head of Research and Professor of Development Finance and Economics at the Business School. He also lectured at the University of Groningen in the Netherlands and University of Ghana. He was a Research Fellow at Afreximbank and has consulted for institutions such as the World Bank, UNCTAD, African Union, and the African Development Bank.
He holds a PhD from Stellenbosch University, an MPhil (Economics) and a BA (Economics and Political Science), both from the University of Ghana.
He served as Programme Head for Development Finance from 2014 to June 2017. Prior to joining the the Business School in 2011, he was on the faculty of the University of Ghana Business School from 2001, serving one term as Head of the Department of Banking and Finance in 2011. From 2007 – 2011 he was Visiting Scholar at the International Monetary Fund in Washington DC, USA.
Prof Adjasi has consulted for various institutions, including the World Bank, Africa Centre for Economic Transformation, the Frederich-Ebert Stiftung Ghana, the Trades Union Congress of Ghana, Investment Climate Facility for Africa and the African Development Bank. In 2016, he served on a panel of experts in the Special Commodities Unit of UNCTAD, Geneva, and facilitated for Tariffs, Trade and Regional Integration within the West African Institute of Economic and Financial Management.
Prof Adjasi is a network member of the African Economic Research Consortium (AERC) Nairobi, Kenya, and the Global Trade Analysis Project (GTAP), Purdue University, West Lafayette, USA. His general research focus is in the area of development finance/economics in Africa, with specific interests in financial markets, FDI and growth, household welfare, firm behaviour and productivity, and international trade and development. He has published widely: 31 articles in internationally reputable journals and three monographs, also contributing five chapters to edited book volumes.
At the Business School, Prof Adjasi teaches on the Development Finance programmes, in Research Methods in Development Finance and Issues and Banking and Finance.
Dr Talon Garikayi
Dr Engineer Talon Garikayi is the current Pro-Vice Chancellor for Research, Innovation and Commercialisation at HIT. He holds several books and journal publications in Mechatronic Systems, Embedded Systems, Biomechatronics, Bionics, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Control Systems and Industrial Automation. He has played a major role on the unlocking value from research outputs for Harare Institute of Technology in the past 3 years. This has resulted in the development of the Tapcard System, the National Fuel Management System (Sahara Fuels), RBZ Bureau de Change Transaction Management System, PayZim (Payment Gateway for event management), Local Authority Database System (LADS), Electronic Health Records System (Impilo for Ministry of Health and Child Care) and many other commercialised solutions.
Dr Chris Mawere
Dr Engineer Christopher Mawere is a businessman and a holder of a doctorate in electrical engineering. Dr Mawere sits on private and public boards. He is the chief executive of Shaslor Projects Contractors, a company that specialises in building, civil and electrical engineering.
Martin Manuhwa
Engineer Martin Manuhwa is the Chair of the 9th UNESCO Africa Engineering Week and 7th Africa Engineering Conference. He is the current Chairperson of the World Federation of Engineering Organisations, Engineering Capacity Building Standing Technical Committee (WFEO CECB). His engineering practice is in energy, construction projects, worksite project implementation and management. He studied Engineering at the University of Zimbabwe, where he also obtained other qualifications including an MBA.
Gladys Rutendo Kanyongo
Gladys has an MPhil (Development Finance) from the University of Stellenbosch in South Africa, as well as a Bachelor of Commerce in Banking Honors from NUST in Zimbabwe. She also has postgraduate certificates in Private Sector Development (Swedish Institute of Public Administrators) and Agricultural & Rural Finance (Centre of Continuous Education, University of Pretoria). Gladys has financial and development sector experience spanning over 25 years.
Kevin Mutete
Engineer Kevin Mutete is the Founder and Managing Director of Techold Engineering. Board Member of Zimbabwe Institution of Engineers and The Chairman for Mashonaland Area for Zimbabwe institution of Engineers.
Maxwell Saungweme
Maxwell Saungweme is Regional Director at Search for Common Ground. For the past 20 years, Maxwell has worked with local civil society organisations (CSOs), local non-governmental organisations (NGOs), contractors, and international NGOs in development, humanitarian, governance and human rights, and peacebuilding sectors. Started his career in governance, human rights, and peacebuilding in Zimbabwe in 2000 with local NGOs.
Maxwell served in various programme management and leadership roles in his country and ten other countries that include Syria, Lebanon, Tanzania, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Nigeria, Afghanistan, Sudan, South Sudan, Mozambique, and Ethiopia. He is a holder of a Master of Philosophy Degree in Development Finance (Cum Laude); a Masters Degree in Development Studies and B.Sc. Degree in Economics. Since 2015 Maxwell has been holding Country Director level positions in various countries with Search for Common Ground.
Isaac Isaki
Isaac Isaki is Acting Director Investment at National Social Security Authority. He is an experienced Investment Professional with over 10 years of progressive experience in the Investment industry. Key areas of expertise include: Equities Investments, International Capital Markets, Trading, Corporate Governance, Financial Risk Management (projects, Fixed Income, Real Estate and Equity) & Control, Financial modelling and investment appraisal, Deal origination, Crafting and implementing investment Strategies, Financial Planning and Business Development.
He has a proven track record in strategic planning and execution of investment strategies and delivery of desired results through people empowerment and the effective use of investment teams. He is also a strong motivator and team player with effective leadership, communication, decision making, problem solving and interpersonal skills, together with a strong self-belief, a results-driven attitude and excellent analytical mind.
